Beneath The Blessington Lakes

The flooding of the Liffey and Kings river valley submerged 76 houses and 6500 acres of farms, four bridges that crossed the rivers, a cemetery, holy wells, bogs, etc. This video shows some of what existed before the reservoir now called Poulaphuca or the Blessington Lakes were created in 1940.

Leveling the Mirabel airport: Wrecking balls to raze monument to heartless government planning.

Farmers from north of Montreal near Mirabel airport protest on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in Nov. 1978, demonstrating against what they say is inadequate compensation for leaving their farms and their homes to accommodate construction of the new international airport.

Aéroports de Montréal, the non-profit authority responsible for Mirabel and Trudeau International Airport in Dorval, says it has spent $30-million over the last 10 years on upkeep of a deserted terminal. An additional $25-million in repairs are required in the short term.

    Basically they threw away $30-million

“There’s nothing you can do with the terminal. It was built for an airport,” Mr. Ginzburg said. “You can’t make anything out of it. Basically they threw away $30-million.”

Gérard Beaudet, a professor of urban studies at the Université de Montréal, said the airport was doomed almost from the day it opened.
